Statue of Unity

The Statue of Unity, standing as a monumental tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India and the nation’s first Home Minister, was inaugurated on October 31st, 2018. Sardar Patel played a pivotal role in uniting 562 princely states to form the Republic of India, a legacy that this towering statue honors. The statue’s expression, posture, and pose embody the dignity, confidence, iron-will, and kindness that were hallmarks of Sardar Patel’s personality.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Satpura and Vindhyachal hills in Kevadia, Gujarat, the Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the world, reaching an impressive height of 182 meters (approximately 600 feet). The statue overlooks the expansive Narmada River basin and the Sardar Sarovar Dam, symbolizing a tribute from the people of Gujarat to the leader who always prioritized the welfare of the nation.

The statue is situated on Sadhu Bet, a hillock connected to the mainland by a 300-meter bridge, allowing easy access to this colossal monument. As part of the outreach program for the project, the state government encouraged Indian farmers to donate used farming tools to collect the iron needed for the statue’s construction. This initiative resulted in the collection of approximately 5,000 tons of iron.

Inside the statue, visitors can explore an in-house museum that provides detailed insights into the construction process and the historical significance of Sardar Patel’s contributions. The statue itself is divided into five zones, each offering a unique perspective.

  • Zone 1 includes the statue’s base up to its shin, comprising three levels: an exhibit floor, mezzanine, and roof, which also features a Memorial Garden and a large museum.
  • Zone 2 extends up to the statue’s thighs at 149 meters.
  • Zone 3 reaches the viewing gallery at 153 meters, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Zone 4 and Zone 5 are not accessible to visitors, with Zone 4 dedicated to maintenance and Zone 5 comprising the statue’s head and shoulders.

The Statue of Unity stands not just as a colossal monument, but as a symbol of national unity, reflecting the spirit and strength of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s leadership.
