The Sardar Sarovar Dam, located on the Narmada River in Navagam near Kevadiya, Gujarat, stands as one of the world’s largest concrete gravity dams. This monumental structure spans 1.2 kilometers and reaches a height of 163 meters from its deepest foundation. It features 30 radial gates, each weighing about 450 tonnes.

This dam was envisioned by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister. The foundation stone was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on April 5, 1961, and construction began in 1987. However, the project faced delays due to the Narmada Bachao Andolan, leading to a Supreme Court halt in 1995 over displacement concerns. It resumed in 2000 with a reduced height of 111 meters, later revised to 123 meters in 2006 and 139 meters in 2017. The dam was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 67th birthday.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam now provides water and electricity to Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. It reached its highest capacity at 138.7 meters on September 15, 2019, and currently holds a gross storage capacity of 0.95 million hectare meters. It ranks as the third highest concrete dam in India and the second largest in the world in terms of concrete volume used, totaling 6.82 million cubic meters. Its spillway can discharge up to 87,000 cubic meters per second, making it the third largest in the world.
